What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an intense, irrational and uncontrollable fear of an object or situation. If you have a phobia, you likely know that your fear is out of proportion to the reality of the threat but logical argument doesn’t help. The fear experienced can be so irrational and intense that it can have a significant impact on your life and how you live it. Phobia suffers will go to great lengths to avoid the object or situation of their fear. Phobias are classified as anxiety disorders and share many symptoms with other anxiety disorders.

The 10 most commonly reported phobias in the UK, according to a survey by Anxiety UK, are:

  • social phobia – fear of interacting with other people
  • agoraphobia – fear of open public spaces
  • emetophobia – fear of vomiting
  • erythrophobia – fear of blushing
  • driving phobia – fear of driving
  • hypochondria – fear of illness
  • aerophobia – fear of flying
  • arachnophobia – fear of spiders
  • zoophobia – fear of animals
  • claustrophobia – fear of confined spaces

There are approximately 500 categorised phobias ranging from specific phobias (fear of specific objects), such as fear of needles to more generalised encompassing phobias such as Social Phobia which is characterised by a fear of unfamiliar people and social scrutiny.
