Hypnotherapy Q&As

IVF asks a lot of you. Hypnotherapy helps with the stress, the injections, the procedures and the waiting, so you can go through treatment feeling calmer and more like yourself.

Why IVF is so demanding

IVF is physically demanding, and for most people it is emotionally demanding too. Each cycle brings appointments, scans, daily injections, procedures and decisions, often fitted around work and kept quiet from colleagues. Then comes the two-week wait, which many people describe as the hardest part of all.

People going through IVF often talk about:

None of this means you are not coping. It is a normal reaction to a process that is genuinely hard.

What hypnotherapy works on

Hypnotherapy for IVF focuses on you: how you feel through treatment and how well you can rest, sleep and look after yourself. Simply having an hour to fully switch off, deeply relaxed, is a welcome relief in itself.

Sessions can include:

You learn self-hypnosis early on, so you have a tool to use every day, through each stage of treatment.

Alongside your clinic

Hypnotherapy works alongside your medical treatment. Keep following your clinic's advice and taking any medication as prescribed. Tim is happy to plan sessions around your treatment calendar, and to work alongside your clinic, counsellor or GP. Many fertility clinics also offer counselling, and that fits well with hypnotherapy too.

Timing your sessions

You can start at any point: before your first cycle, between cycles or partway through. Starting before treatment gives you time to practise self-hypnosis, so it is second nature by the time you need it. If you are already mid-cycle, sessions can focus on what is in front of you right now, such as an upcoming procedure or the wait.

Tell Tim your key dates at the free consultation, and sessions can be arranged around them. Online sessions can be especially useful during treatment, when you may not want to travel.

For partners too

IVF affects both partners. A partner may feel helpless, anxious or under pressure to stay strong. Partners are welcome to have their own sessions, to work on their own stress and sleep.

Looking after yourself through treatment

IVF can take over your calendar and your thoughts. Small, regular habits help: time each day when fertility isn't the topic, a few minutes of self-hypnosis morning and evening, gentle exercise you enjoy, and a plan for the days you know will be hardest. Sessions help you build these into your routine so they don't become one more thing to get right.

After an unsuccessful cycle

When a cycle doesn't work, the disappointment can be overwhelming, and decisions about what comes next often have to be made quickly. Sessions give you space to grieve, to steady yourself and to think clearly about the next step, whatever it is. If you are carrying a loss, hypnotherapy for grief may also help.

Getting started

The stress of IVF is one of the areas where hypnotherapy is particularly well suited, because so much of it comes from a body and mind on constant alert. Tim's wider approach to calming that alert is explained in hypnotherapy for stress in London. Sessions take place in person in Farringdon, central London, or online.

Common questions

Can I have hypnotherapy during an IVF cycle?

Yes. Sessions can start at any stage and are planned around your treatment dates.

Can hypnotherapy help with the two-week wait?

Yes. Sessions give you techniques for the racing thoughts and broken sleep that so often come with the wait.

I'm scared of the injections. Can that be worked on?

Yes. Fear of needles responds well to hypnotherapy, and sessions can focus on making daily injections feel routine.

Can my partner come too?

Partners are welcome to book their own sessions to work on their own stress and sleep.

Can I have sessions online during treatment?

Yes. Online sessions are a good option during IVF, when appointments and procedures can make travelling harder.
