Hypnotherapy for Alcohol Dependency

Are you dependent on alcohol to deal with your emotions, stress, anxieties or life in general? Are you physically dependent on alcohol? If you are, you are not alone. In England, there are an estimated 595,000 dependent drinkers, of whom only around 100,000 are currently accessing treatment. According to the NHS, in 2016/2017, there were 1.1 million estimated hospital admissions where the primary reason or a secondary diagnosis was linked to alcohol, this represents 7.0% of all hospital admissions. Alcohol Concern state that Alcohol is a causal factor in more than 60 medical conditions, including: mouth, throat, stomach, liver and breast cancers; high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver; and depression. Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year-olds in the UK, and the fifth biggest risk factor across all ages.

People become dependent on alcohol for many different reasons. For some, it may be simply through repetitive behaviour but for many more there are underlying psychological issues which contribute towards the behaviour. These issues may include dealing with life stresses, emotions, anxiety disorders or depression where alcohol becomes a way of self-medicating to alleviate the symptoms.  Alcohol is an anxiolytic meaning it reduces anxiety but only while you are drinking, once the effects of the alcohol wear off anxiety is increased. This may then lead to further consumption (‘a hair of the dog’) and so on.
